After living in a townhome for almost 4 years with a backyard the size of sardine can, I was so excited to have a real backyard to decorate! We bought our new house in the spring of 2021, which came with a brick patio and wood deck out back – the perfect canvas to decorate. Over the last couple of years, we refinished the deck, creating even more space for our coastal furniture and decor.
Coastal Patio Ideas Mood Board

Shop the Look
Before starting any design project, I always build a mood board. THIS is my go-to mood board site. I search sites finding furniture and decor pieces that I’m considering. Simply save the pics of each item and drag them into the mood board. I will upload lots of different options and then narrow down the ones that I feel coordinate the best. You can even share your public link with friends and family to collaborate together.
Tip: Always measure your space before you start researching furniture and decor pieces. You need to know how much space you’re working with before you buy anything!
Coastal Outdoor Sectional Sofa

Our wood deck used to have an old hot tub built into it. This took up a ton of space! We ripped out the old hot tub and rebuilt, sanded, and re-stained the deck to a dark rich chocolate brown. We used Behr Cordovan Brown solid stain.
I found our coastal outdoor sectional set at Wayfair. The blue cushions are more of a cobalt blue than a navy, but I really like the color. I paired it with the quintessential coastal striped rug (also from Wayfair).

I love this sectional set! It’s lightweight and you can move the pieces around to fit different layouts. The cushions are also really comfortable! This set can take a beating, including multiple hail storms, and it’s held up great. At the time of this post, it’s out of stock but I found some similar options. Hopefully they get it back in stock this summer!
Our patio umbrella is also from Wayfair, and it’s awesome. I ordered a big one (120″) that shades our entire sofa sectional even during the sunniest part of the day. Be sure to order an umbrella base (sold separately). We fill ours up with water to weigh down the umbrella on windy days.

Coastal Outdoor Throw Pillows

I spend more time coordinating throw pillows when I’m decorating than anything else. Matching colors to the deep blue of of these cushions takes some serious mood boarding! However, last winter, our resident squirrels ate a hole in 2 of my sofa cushions! As luck would have it, this outdoor sofa actually came with two sets of cushion covers — blue and a neutral light beige. Rather than buy more blue covers, I decided to embrace the beige this summer. I really love the look of the neutral cushions against the gorgeous mountain backdrop of our new home.
I found some beautiful 20×20 blue textured outdoor throw pillows from West Elm. Of course, they’re sold out now but I linked some that are almost identical. My smaller floral 18×18 throw pillow and striped throw blanket are from Target circa 2021, but I found some very similar ones!
Once you find pillows you love, buy them. While there may be some that carry over year to year, many are one and done!

Coastal Outdoor Lounge Chairs & Side Table

I was on the hunt for solid wood outdoor lounge chairs and scored this gorgeous set. Because they are solid wood, they are heavy! We store them in our outdoor closet during the winter and it takes some muscle to lift them.
Invest in furniture covers for these. Because the cushions are light, everything shows up on them. Several times during the summer, I fill a bowl with laundry soap and water and use a microfiber cloth to scrub them down. When I know we’re expecting rain, I always cover them.
Since I already had a striped rug on the deck, I opted for a fun diamond shape geometric rug from Rugs USA that still brought out those coastal vibes. The striped blanket and throw pillow are sold out, but I linked similar ones.
The coordinating acacia wood side table is from Wayfair. I tuck it between the lounge chairs and it’s the perfect size. These lounge chairs are absolutely amazing for relaxing in and reading a book, which is exactly what I do on summer mornings before it gets too hot!
Tip: Wipe your furniture down with teak oil and a microfiber cloth every few months to keep your wood looking like brand new.

Coastal Outdoor Dining Set

I debated between doing a white Polywood dining table or wood table and opted for a solid wood outdoor dining set from Wayfair. This 7-piece acacia wood set comes with 4 chairs and a long bench. I also specifically looked for a table with an umbrella hole and even picked out the cutest striped umbrella. However, I realized that this table only gets sun for about an hour each morning and then it’s completely shaded, so it doesn’t really need an umbrella.
Because the chairs are wood, I wanted to add some extra cushion. I found these super cute and ultra-comfy cushions from Wayfair. They’re navy blue with white piping. I also found the perfect navy and white chevron outdoor area rug from Wayfair. It adds the perfect touch of coastal style.
We have family out every summer and lots of dinner nights with friends, and this table is excellent for outdoor dining. Like our wood lounge chairs, we always cover this set when there is rain in the forecast or if we aren’t going to use it for a while. Even though acacia wood is water resistant, you need to protect it from the elements as much as possible. I also treat it with teak oil every few months to restore the wood and keep it looking new.

Outdoor plates, bowls, and glasses are a must so you’re not lugging your nice dishes outside and risking shattering them to pieces (especially if you have little ones around). I linked some really cute ones I’m obsessing over!

Small Coastal Outdoor Patio Inspiration

Our old backyard was tiny with just enough room for a couple coastal bistro chairs and a garden stool (but was still perfect for sipping wine and watching sunsets!). I took these to our new house and use the chairs for extra seating.
Hanging baskets of petunias are my favorite summertime flowers. We get them at a nursery every year!

We just love our backyard oasis. I hope you found some good inspiration from these coastal outdoor furniture and decor ideas. Happy decorating!
