Get inspired by this modern railing which complements a classic coastal style with a sleek modern edge.
Walking into our home has a real wow factor. You’re immediately met with an open floor plan which showcases a gorgeous open concept kitchen and living room bordered with black modern railing. It’s a huge part of the reason why we bought this house.
I am bit of a traditionalist at heart, so my style tends to lean more classic versus modern. My husband loves to say I have grandma style, and he’s not wrong! Though I will say that over the years, my style has definitely evolved to include more modern elements. And I really love how this modern railing elevates the look of our home.

Modern Railing: Split Level Railing Ideas
Our home is split level, so there are a lot of stairs and varying heights of rooms. You definitely wouldn’t want to walk around our house in the dark without risk of falling on your face! Our kitchen is 5 steps up from our formal living area, so a railing is necessary for safety.
The previous owner did a major remodel on this space. The kitchen was previously closed off and the stair railing was very old school traditional. They knocked down walls to create an open concept between the kitchen, dining room, and living room. Then, modern railing was added to up-level the space and give it a more modern look and feel.
What’s awesome about modern railing is that it can really complement any style. My style is very much coastal, which was hard for me to envision with the railing at first. But I think I’ve really made it work by selecting specific coordinating furniture and decor. Choose decor pieces with a similar look and feel to your railing to help tie in the design theme.
For our barstools, which sit right between our kitchen island and the railing, I found the cutest modern coastal style from Ballard Designs. The woven chair brings in those coastal organic materials while the black metal legs have a more modern aesthetic to match the railing.
Modern Stair Railing
We have black modern stair railing on our entryway stairs as well as the stairs that lead to the second floor. I love how much visual interest this adds to our house and coordinates with the railing across the kitchen. The railing is incredibly secure and high quality. Not only does it look beautiful but it’s highly functional too!
Because all of this railing was already installed when we bought the house, I don’t know exactly what they used. But I do know they bought a ton of their remodel supplies at Home Depot, so I’ve linked very similar items below from a brand with excellent reviews. Be sure to measure your space to determine exactly how much you need. There are several different size railings to choose from.
How to Clean Railing
Our railing is super easy to care for. First, I wipe down all our railing with a microfiber cloth every week. I buy them in bulk from Amazon and use them for so many purposes – from dusting to sealing our countertops. They’re so versatile! Invest in microfiber cloths if you haven’t already.
Second, I check to see if any of the railing needs to be touched up. If they ever happened to get scratched, I use black paint pens to touch them up. I bought some from Amazon that I use as needed, and they always look good as new!
I have never dusted the cables, nor have I ever seen dust on them. If you want to clean them, use something gentle, like a microfiber duster.
Railing Base
Not long after we bought our house, we noticed our laminate wood flooring was starting to buckle under the railing along our kitchen floor. It was only noticeable if you were standing in our living room.
Our contractor recommended pulling up our railing, removing those laminate pieces, and installing a long wood railing base. Next, he painted it white and reinstalled our railing. It integrates perfectly with the white trim that sits on top of our navy shiplap wall below.
I was really stressed out about how this was going to look, but I really like it! It adds more contrast, so the black modern railing really pops. The white also adds a bit more of a traditional classic coastal vibe to balance out the modern aesthetic of the railing.
Black Modern Railing
This black modern railing is one of my favorite things in this house, and I love that I was able to fully integrate my coastal style with it. It’s so versatile and stunning that I know it’s going to be huge selling point whenever we decide to make our next move.
If you are considering using modern railing in your house, I 100% recommend it. I hope this was able to provide you some good inspiration for your next project. Happy decorating!
