Bring the beauty of the beach indoors and create a space that’s stylish and functional with these beach house living room ideas.
Beach design is similar to coastal design in a lot of ways but can be taken in different directions. While both designs are light and airy, beach design has freedom to be a bit more bold. Leaning heavily into organic materials and textures are key to creating a beach house living room that has all those breezy oceanside vibes while still keeping your home modern and fresh.
I love coastal and beach designed homes. In fact, my husband and I are already plotting a way for us to own a little place plopped on a beautiful beach somewhere that we can escape to. If you love beach design, then you’ll love these easy breezy beach house living room ideas.

How to Design a Beach House Living Room
Beach house design is incredibly flexible and a great opportunity to inject your personal style into your home. Check out my mood boards below which show the versatility of beach house design. From classic or traditional to boho influences, you can really make this style your own! Where coastal style tends to be more minimalist, beach house design is all about going heavy with organic materials, so you can see I have really leaned in on those pieces.

There are really quite a few different directions you could take your beach house living room furniture, starting with your sofa. A white sofa is always the first option people think of, and this can look absolutely gorgeous.
If you don’t have kids or animals climbing all over it, a white sofa can be beautiful in your beach house. Look for fabrics that are stain resistant and easy to clean or opt for slipcovers that can be easily removed and washed.
Pair your white sofa with blue rug, blue chairs, and an organic material coffee table. A rattan chandelier adds the perfect statement piece to your living room. Finish it off with some surf wall art to bring in all the ocean vibes.

Personally, I am a huge fan of leather sofas simply for the fact that they are SO easy to clean! I have a leather sectional in my coastal living room, and I love it.
Leather might not be the first thing you think of when you think beach sofa, but it can totally work! Throw pillows, rugs, and other decor items can bring out all the beachy vibes you need while allowing you to have a sofa that you can literally run a leather wipe over to clean. Plus, leather is the MOST comfortable couch in my opinion!
Don’t go grandma leather. You know the ones I’m talking about — very log cabin-ish. Nix the overly traditional leather sofas for styles that are more modern and sleek.
Pair your leather sofa with a bold striped jute rug to bring in texture and color. Accent furniture in organic materials like rattan and rope will help bring in more beachy vibes. A rattan chandelier makes the perfect statement in your beach house living room. Finish it off with beautiful beach art to complement your beachy theme and bring in more color.

Another great option for that beach house look is to choose a sofa in organic materials like cane or wicker. Sure, you can bring in those elements through your accent furniture but you can really make a statement with your sofa, since it’s likely the largest piece of furniture in the room.
While beach house design embraces organic materials, be careful with how you mix them. You don’t want everything to look identical. Mix it up when choosing your pieces. If you choose cane for one item, go for rattan or wicker in accent pieces. I will often use 3-4 organic materials in a room design.
I paired this cane sofa with a solid wood fluted coffee table and blue modern accent chairs. Statement lighting will really elevate your beach house design. Here, I chose a tiered natural capiz shell chandelier, which has a real wow factor. Polish it off with modern blue art.

Beach Decor Must-Haves:
Natural Materials: Think jute, wicker, rattan, and cane. Lighting, baskets, decorative boxes, and even a jute rug are perfect ways to bring in an organic touch. Mix and match organic materials throughout your design.
Color: A beach house design can certainly embrace a neutral palette but it needs some color. Blues hues are the most popular. If you want to go more bold with your design, layer in green, pink, and yellow. Bring in color through throw pillows, wall art, rugs, or even your accent furniture!
Beachy Decorative Objects: Seashells, coral, rope, wooden knots all make excellent beach decor. To create the ultimate beachy experience, use beach scented candles or diffusers. If your living room is going to look beachy, it should also smell beachy!
Beach house design is packed with beauty and warmth and will elevate any home. I hope this post gave you some great beach house decor living room ideas. Happy decorating!
