See this navy blue bathroom before and after to inspire your very own coastal powder room makeover.
If you love a navy bathroom with modern coastal style, you’ve come to the right place! This half bath was one of the first spaces we tackled in our new house. Well, the house is new to us, but it was built in 1978 and definitely wasn’t my style.
BEFORE:
The previous owner had pretty traditional taste, and this bathroom needed a major makeover. This is the main bathroom used by our guests, so I wanted to make sure it served the best impression of our home. To coordinate with the rest of the house, I wanted a blue and white themed bathroom that embraced a modern coastal style, without going too beachy, since we live in the mountains (and nowhere near the coast!).
We were working within a budget for our entire home renovation, and we ended up spending just over $1,000 on this navy blue bathroom makeover. I find it useful to nerd out and create a spreadsheet that lists each item that is going into the space, how much it costs, and the website link. This was really helpful for keeping us on budget!
Purchases were made in the spring of 2021, so pricing may have changed. Small decor items were not included.
Also, I love to create mood boards to visualize how different pieces will coordinate together. Things that look great in your head don’t always work once you see them in context. My favorite website to create mood boards is http://www.gomoodboard.com. It’s free and simple to use. Plus, you can share them with friends or family to get their opinions on your stylistic choices!
Once I had all our items picked out and purchased, it was go time. Read below to discover the perfect pieces I found to create a modern coastal navy blue bathroom without breaking the bank.
How to Create a Modern Coastal Bathroom
Navy Blue Bathroom Vanity
Almost all of the vanities I picked out for our bathrooms were white, but I wanted to have fun with this space. So, I chose a navy blue vanity from Wayfair. It’s a beautiful rich navy with a white quartz countertop and gold hardware. I have always had polished nickel hardware, so I was excited to try something a bit more modern and on trend to warm up the space.
This vanity is amazing quality. In fact, I ended up putting this same vanity brand in all of our other bathrooms, and I’ve been really happy with them.
Here is a close-up view of the vanity during demo. This isn’t the best picture, but it’s truly stunning in person!
White Subway Tile Backsplash
A lot of the bathroom vanities I looked at had built-in splash guards along the back and sides. We had that in our last house, but I never really loved that look as much as a tiled backsplash. I made sure our vanity came clean, so we could add the tile backsplash. I went with a classic white tile backsplash to compliment the coastal look I was going for. Subway tile is super versatile and literally goes with everything! It’s also a very affordable tile option, and you can find it at any hardware store (like Home Depot or Lowes).
Gold Mirror
I wasn’t sure whether to do a round mirror or rectangle mirror in this space, but I ended up finding the perfect mirror at Target. I had to research what size mirror to hang, and the rule of thumb is to find one that’s 2-6” smaller than the vanity it’s hanging over. My vanity was 30” wide, and this mirror is 24” wide, so it fit perfectly. It was also way cheaper than a lot of the alternative mirrors I found.
Bathroom Fixtures
I started off building my mood board with much more “luxury” faucets in mind but ended up finding this gorgeous Delta faucet in champagne bronze. I bought the coordinating towel ring and toilet paper holder as well!
Modern Bathroom Lighting
I had originally wanted to do more of a coastal cage light, but they hung down too far for our ceiling height. Luckily, I fell in love with this natural brass semi-flush pendant from Lamps Plus for less than $100, and it works perfectly in the space.
Blue Striped Wallpaper
I have been obsessing over wallpapered rooms on Pinterest for years, but I was never brave enough to commit to it. This coastal powder room felt like the perfect place to dive in head first. I really wanted to try to install it myself, but I’ve never done it before. So, I had our contractor do it, and it turned out better than expected!
Even though this navy blue bathroom is tiny, the striped wallpaper doesn’t make it feel too busy at all. It actually makes it feel open and spacious. This wallpaper has a threaded design, so it looks textured even though it’s smooth to the touch, and it’s gorgeous in person.
Finishing Touches
Since this bathroom is small, I didn’t want to crowd it with decor. The walls are kept completely clean, with the exception of the towel ring and toilet paper holder. I thought about hanging art above the toilet, but I didn’t want to put holes in my beautiful wallpaper or risk tearing it with peel and stick.
I found this beautiful hand soap and lotion set from William Sonoma. We have so many real plants in our home that I only use a handful of faux ones. But I felt like the counter needed a little more love, so I picked up this faux boxwood plant from Target for $5 – you can’t beat prices like that!
I got all of my bathroom hand towels from Etsy. They’re Turkish towels and are amazing quality. Plus, they’re only $5 a piece! They no longer make this exact color, but I found one very similar here. They have tons of colors and prints to choose from. I’ve had our hand towels for a couple years now, so it’s about time to order some new ones!
