The layered doormat trend is nothing new. This trend started years ago and is still going strong! I love the look of layering a stylish rug under your doormat. Not only does it add visual interest to your front porch, but it’s the perfect opportunity to bring in more of your design style before anyone steps foot in your home. It’s also an easy way to elevate your outdoor entryway and make it look stylish and polished.
What Size Rug to Layer Under Doormat
Layer a 3’x5’ rug under your doormat for the best visual balance. I have actually used a larger 4’x6′ rug before on a very large front porch, but it can dwarf your doormat a bit. You can also go smaller (2’x3’) if you have a small front porch or don’t want a lot of your layered rug to show.
The standard size doormat is 30” L x 18” W. A 2’x3’ rug is technically large enough to layer with your doormat, but you won’t see a whole lot of your rug peaking through with that size. 3’ W x 5’ L is just big enough to not overwhelm your doormat and large enough so that the color and pattern of your layering rug are fully visible.
How to Choose the Perfect Doormat Layering Rug

Always choose a rug that’s meant for the outdoors.
This might sound like a no brainer, but outdoor rugs can take a literal beating, so you need materials that are meant to withstand all the outdoor elements (dirt, mud, wind, rain, snow, etc.). I always choose polypropylene material for our outdoor rugs. It’s so durable and easy to clean. I just run a broom over them periodically and even power wash them when needed!
Bring in your decor style through color and patterns.
I have always gone for blue rug with white stripes for our front porch layered rug. It’s quintessential coastal, but it’s also just a simple pattern truly complements any decorating style. A solid color rug is also an option if you want to keep things really simple.
Coordinate your layering rug with your doormat.
If your doormat is a plain jute or just has some basic black writing (like “Welcome”), the sky’s the limit on what you choose for your layering rug. However, if there is color or a pattern on your doormat, consider that when choosing your layered rug. For example, my last Fall doormat had orange and blue pumpkins on it. Before choosing it, I made sure the blue coordinated with the blue in my layering rug.

Layered Doormat Decorating

Planters make the perfect decorating accessory to pair with a layered doormat. I have had these Nantucket white planters for the last four years, and I still love them! Placing planters on each side of your outdoor layered doormat completes the look and frames your front door perfectly.
