Get inspired with the best coastal headboard ideas to elevate a beautiful, classic coastal bedroom style.
A few years ago, my husband and I invested in a Temper-pedic adjustable bed. If you have a partner that snores or you just want to get the best rest of your life, I highly recommend checking them out!
We took our king metal bed and moved it to our guest bedroom. Rather than buying a new complete bed, I decided to just buy a headboard for our coastal bedroom. A simple headboard can do a lot to elevate your bedroom design.
I placed a beautiful wicker bench at the end of our bed to help “hide” the adjustable base. Also, I searched and found the perfect oversized down comforter and duvet cover for our king bed. Standard king bedding was like high water pants on our bed. Definitely invest in oversized bedding if you have a king bed or a tall mattress. It’s a total game changer!

If you have an adjustable base or a bed frame that requires a separate headboard, this gives you a great opportunity to get really creative. Separate headboards can actually offer a lot more style options than buying a complete bed. Check out my curations below of the best coastal headboard ideas to inspire your coastal bedroom design.
Cream Coastal Headboards
An off-white or cream upholstered fabric makes a perfect coastal headboard option. This is the direction I went in our coastal bedroom. With a neutral headboard like this, you have a lot of creative freedom with your other bedroom furniture and bedding.
A neutral headboard doesn’t have to be boring! Look for details like nailhead trim, scalloped or wingback designs, or tufting to give your headboard more visual interest. Complement your neutral headboard with blue hues through furniture or bedding to infuse coastal vibes.

Tip: Always build a mood board when designing a room. This will help you perfectly coordinate all of your furniture and decor items. I built mood boards for each headboard look to give you inpiration!
Cream Coastal King Headboard Mood Board
I paired a nailhead trim cream headboard with navy wood nightstands, an 8×10 navy/stone traditional rug, and gold sconces. This look is a more sophisticated and elevated coastal style.

Wicker Coastal Headboards
Wicker coastal headboards bring in organic materials that really complement a coastal bedroom design. You can choose from many different woven materials like rattan, seagrass, and cane.
Wicker headboards also come in a lot of different wood tones. Choose headboards that bring in similar tones to what’s already in your house. If your house has warm tones, choose warmer tone wicker headboards. It’s okay to mix light and dark but make sure you keep the tones consistent.

Wicker Coastal King Headboard Mood Board
I paired a light tone wicker coastal headboard with a light blue 8×10 area rug, white wood nightstands with gold hardware, and white ceramic lamps with gold accents. This headboard and nightstands are more coastal grandma, but the lamps bring in a little modern edge.

Blue Coastal Headboards
Blue coastal headboards help anchor your room with color. Light blues give a more airy coastal vibe while darker blues are a bit more classic and nautical. Blues can be tough to match so keep that in mind if you already have blue items in your room you’re trying to coordinate with.
Like I always preach, mood boarding is the way to go! Also, look at customer reviews versus just relying on the product pictures. They’re often a much better indicator of what the color looks like in real life.

Blue Coastal King Headboard Mood Board
I paired a blue headboard with an ivory/blue dynamic striped 8×10 cotton rug, natural rattan nightstands, and polished nickel sconces. Keep in mind that your blues do not have to match identically but they should be close!
This is a very classic coastal look with the medium shade blues, stripes, rattan, and polished nickel finishes. I think this is my favorite look of the whole bunch!

Striped Coastal Headboards
Stripes are the quintessential print for coastal style. A striped coastal headboard makes a true coastal statement in your bedroom. I am currently obsessed with switching our cream headboard out for a striped one, so this is great inspiration for me too!
Consider other pieces in your bedroom. Do you already have prints in your rug or bedding? You can absolutely mix prints but you want to make sure things don’t get too busy. I can be guilty of over striping my decor because I love stripes! It’s okay to incorporate more than one stripe print in your bedroom but you can quite literally go overboard if you’re not careful.
If you choose a striped headboard, go for complementary prints in other decor items like florals, paisleys, or even polka dots!

Striped Coastal King Headboard Mood Board
I paired a navy/white striped headboard with an 8×10 jute rug, solid wood distressed white nightstands with a cane storage shelf, and brass table lamps.
This is about as classic coastal as they come. Navy stripes are tailored and timeless. Jute brings in an organic feel to soften the design and gold accents add a touch of modern flair.

Tip: If you find nightstands to coordinate with your headboard but you don’t like the hardware they come with, change it out! Hardware is a super easy thing to swap, so don’t let that discourage you from buying furniture you like. I change out furniture hardware all the time and it’s really inexpensive!
A headboard is the focal point of your bed and can really uplevel your entire bedroom design. I hope these coastal headboard ideas gave you some good inspiration for your next bedroom upgrade. Happy decorating!
