Get tips on how to style a classic coastal daybed that’s perfect for kids or guests.
I love to host guests and my sisters visit us at least once a year with their pack of children. We have a king size guest bed for adults, but we needed a bed for the kids that didn’t take up a ton of room. The only space in our last house for the kids to stay was in the basement, so I explored different bed options. A twin bed would fit, but I loved the idea of doing a daybed with a trundle to give us an extra sleeping space.
Coastal Daybed with Trundle
A daybed with a trundle made the most sense because it’s like a mini bunk bed. You get two twin beds in one without taking up any additional space than the single bed. The trundle bed tucks underneath the daybed and can be easily rolled out for extra guests.
I found our coastal daybed from Wayfair. It’s metal and came in a bunch of different finish options. We have a metal bed in our guest room that is oil rubbed bronze, but I decided to do white in the basement to keep it light and bright. Basements tend to get less light than the rest of the home, so white was a perfect option.
Since we recently moved into our forever home, this daybed is now upstairs in a room that gets a ton of natural light. I am still glad I chose the white though. It’s so pretty! The exact bed I bought it out of stock, but I linked some very similar ones below.
When choosing a coastal daybed, there are a lot of different options. If you like coastal grandma or more traditional styles, look for daybeds with more curves and details on the rails. If you want a more classic coastal look, go for more streamlined designs. I personally wanted this daybed to be more classic coastal, so that’s style I chose.
Coastal Daybed Bedding
When looking for bedding for a coastal daybed, go for comforters or quilts in blues and whites. I wanted to do a classic stripe print and found the most adorable reversible blue and white striped comforter set from Wayfair. The one I bought is sold out, but I found some equally cute ones below!
A comfortable mattress is a must! I chose an 8″ memory foam mattress that is ultra comfortable. I’ve actually slept on it a few times and it was incredible comfy! Always protect your mattresses with a good mattress pad.
We have Boll and Branch sheets on all of our king beds but for the daybed, I opted for more budget-friendly sheets from Amazon. These sheets are high quality and oh-so-comfortable. My sister loved them so much, she ordered them for her own beds at home!
How to Style a Daybed
When it came to styling our coastal daybed, I wanted to keep it really simple with some coordinating throw pillows and a throw blanket. See below for easy steps to creating a classic and stylish daybed.
Step 1: Place your sleeping pillows upright on the left and right side of the bed and place your sham pillows directly in front.
Step 2: Place a large 24×24 pillow in the middle with a lumbar pillow in front.
Step 3: Drape a throw blanket across the end of the bed in the corner.
Don’t be afraid to mix and match different shades of blue or even different prints. The goal is to create a cohesive and balanced look. The comforter I picked was light blue and white striped. I complemented it with a darker blue 24×24 pillow in back and a color blocked lumbar pillow. The throw blanket on the end is also darker color blocked, helping to tie in the pillows.
My throw pillows and blanket are Hearth & Hand from Target. I bought them in 2021, so unfortunately they’re no longer available. If you find pillows or throws you love, always grab them before they’re gone! Check out Amazon for throw pillows and blankets. They’re assortment is getting cuter and cuter. Plus, they tend to not sell out like Target or Home Goods (and they’re super affordable!).
Coastal Daybed Styling Ideas
Always make a mood board when you’re styling your daybed (or any bed for that matter!). I never eyeball anything when I’m decorating. You want to see everything laid out together to make sure your colors and prints coordinate.
I’ve started using Canva to easily and quickly throw looks together. Swap out different products to find the perfect combinations. Check out my coastal daybed styling mood boards below for inspiration!

Always use down pillow inserts for maximum density and fluff. Poly filled are just not as pretty in my opinion! Also, for your 24×24 pillow cover, go up a size for your insert to 26×26 so that it completely fills out the cover.
I hope this post gave you some good inspiration for your coastal daybed. Happy decorating!
