Discover the dreamiest coastal bedroom design packed with seaside style, ultra comfort, and tranquility.
I love our primary bedroom. It’s definitely the biggest bedroom I’ve ever had, which means there is a lot of room to get creative with the design. Most of the pieces in our bedroom came from our old house, so they weren’t new. But our bedroom looks completely different from our old one! It’s so funny how your design style can evolve over time. Plus, the more you play around with designing, the better at it you get!
Check out our old bedroom:
Our old bedroom had a lot of darker navy accents and leaned much more traditional. I opted to transition into more neutral colors mixed with lighter blues this time. Read below for all the decorating details of this beautiful coastal bedroom design.
Coastal Bedroom Design Mood Board
Before buying any furniture or decor pieces for your coastal bedroom, always build a mood board first. Since I already had existing furniture, I threw those into my mood board as foundation pieces. Then, I could add in new items to see how they coordinated together.
You can find free mood boards HERE.

Coastal Bed
We have a king size adjustable bed. If you have a snoring spouse like I do, I highly recommend it! It’s an investment, but it was a game changer for us. Because our adjustable bed came with a specific frame, I only needed to buy a headboard. I chose a neutral linen colored upholstered headboard with a nail button border treatment.
This headboard is elegant and versatile, so it will complement a lot of styles. You can infuse coastal style with wood beds, metal beds, or upholstered beds. Keep your colors lighter for a more airy coastal vibe.
Neutral & Light Blue Coastal Bedding
I am very particular about bedding! Comfort is my number one priority and will trump style all day long. That said, there is no reason your comfortable bedding can’t also be stylish. Because our mattress is tall, I want sheets and a comforter that will completely cover the mattress. I cannot stand when your sheets or comforter are too short on the sides, and it seems like so many are! I’ve been disappointed too many times, so I finally found some brands I really like.
Boll & Branch Sheets
Our sheets are Boll & Branch. My mom (who is the bargain queen and buys Costco everything!) surprisingly turned me onto Boll & Branch, and I haven’t looked back. They are pricey, but they are also the most comfortable sheets I’ve ever slept on, so they’re worth it!
Not only are they ultra-soft and comfy, but they are longer than other traditional King sheets I’ve bought. Look for their sales, so you don’t have to pay full price. Also, wash them on the cold delicate cycle and dry them on the lowest heat setting or they will shrink. (I found out the hard way!)
These are very high-quality sheets, so if you take care of them, they will last!
Oversized Comforter
I finally found a comforter that isn’t the equivalent of high-water pants for your bed! Our down comforter and duvet cover are oversized, making them longer than a standard king comforter. I found them on Amazon and bought a couple different duvet cover sets, so I wouldn’t have to wash them every week.
It does take some getting used to, because they’re so much longer, but I absolutely love them. I bought the same ones for our guest room too. If you have issues with your comforter being too short, buy these immediately!
There aren’t a lot of print options, but I went for a classic white and brought in color through the pillows and blanket.
Coastal Bed Pillows
My husband hates decorative pillows, but I think they make the bed look so much nicer. He loves me, so he’s willing to tolerate them. LOL
I stack our bed pillows against the headboard and place 3 Euro pillows in front. I chose 100% flax linen pillow covers in a neutral linen shade from Amazon. The inserts also came from Amazon. Amazon is a great place to buy pillow inserts and covers. Always buy 100% down pillows vs poly fill, because they look so much better, and you can do the infamous karate chop to the top of them.
I am obsessed with our lumbar pillow. It’s so beautiful! I still can’t believe I found this on Amazon. The craftsmanship and the colors are just stunning. It’s even more pretty in person than in the pictures. This pillow cover comes in the light blue color I bought and a darker navy, as well as other neutral options. It’s also handmade and supports a small business, which I love doing. I even ended up buying one for my sister as a gift!
Coastal Blanket
Trying to match blues in decor pieces should require a PHD. I am serious! I feel pretty badly about how many blankets I bought and returned because I was having such a hard time getting the blues to coordinate. This is why I stress the importance of mood boards. I was building mood boards and still found it incredibly challenging! This is one of the nuisances of shopping online. If the online image color is off even slightly due to lighting or whatever, it can create inconsistency in your design.
Luckily, I found the perfect blanket at Home Depot! It’s Tommy Bahama brand and 100% cotton. This blanket is VERY soft, but it gets snags pretty much every time I wash it. I just trim them with sharp scissors, and it looks good as new. This blanket also produced more lint than I’ve ever seen before! For the first few washes, be prepared to clean the lint tray midway through the drying cycle. I’ve now washed it about half a dozen times, and the lint has calmed down considerably.
Coastal Nightstand
Sconce | Vase | Pampas Grass | Marble Tray | Wicker Tray
I bought our nightstands in 2017. They used to be stained dark brown. A couple years ago, we painted them Benjamin Moore Hale Navy, and they look so much better! If you read my Navy Basement Renovation post, you know all about my love affair with Hale Navy. I even inspired one of my friends to paint her front door this color, and it looks so good!
The navy blue is much more coastal than the heavy, dark brown was. If you have furniture that is in good shape but the wrong color, add a couple coats of your favorite paint shade to them, and you’d be surprised what a difference it makes. Painting is a lot cheaper than buying brand new furniture pieces too!
I added neutral ceramic vases to both nightstands and filled them with dried pampas. I’m not a big fan of faux plants, so I use them very sparingly. Dried pampas are the perfect beautiful natural plant option that you don’t have to water! I have them all over the house.
I’m not one for matchy-matchy, but I found these wicker trays that fit the bottom of the nightstands perfectly. My husband and I both love to read at night, so we stack our books there. It keeps the top of our nightstands from getting cluttered.
I bought a marble circular tray on Amazon to corral my white noise machine and a candle. If you like to keep tissues next to the bed, opt for a wicker tissue box cover.
Sconce | Vase | Pampas Grass | Tissue Box | Diffuser | Wicker Tray
Reed diffusers are an easy way to add beautiful decorative accents to your bedroom that smell amazing. Sweet Water Decor makes the best reed diffusers. I love the Salt & Sea scent. Choose from a bunch of different fragrances on Amazon (see link above)!
Coastal Sconces
I have always loved the look of sconces, but I didn’t want the commitment of hard wiring them in our bedroom. Luckily, I found some very affordable ones that have cords you can easily hide with coordinating cord covers.
Sconces free up so much space on your nightstand since you don’t have to make room for table lamps. These are also adjustable so you can move them closer when you’re in bed reading!
Coastal Dresser Alternative
I wrote an entire blog about my dresser alternative. It offers so much storage and brings in those perfect coastal vibes. Fill it with wicker storage baskets or simply stack your clothes in the cubes.
NOTE: I found a more affordable wicker storage basket set HERE.
Coastal Accent Pieces
Striped Chair | Textured Pillow Covers | Candle | Lamp | Blue & White Pot | Cane Cabinet
Coastal Storage Cabinet
You can never have enough storage and I found the cutest cane-accented storage cabinet for our bedroom. I keep extra candles, chargers, and more in this cabinet. I debated putting art above it but decided to keep it simple with a white concrete lamp that I love so much, a plant, and a Studio McGee candle from Target.
Striped Coastal Accent Chair
I bought this adorable blue and white striped accent chair for our last house. It used to be in our living room. There wasn’t a good spot for it in our new living room, so I brought it upstairs to our bedroom. It adds a nice, relaxing element to our room. I paired it with a texture striped beige pillow cover I found on Amazon.
When you’re decorating with stripes, mix in solids or prints that don’t compete. It’s all about balance!
Bedroom Art
The art above our bed is definitely not coastal – in fact, it’s pictures of a ski resort! I wanted to do a beautiful coastal scene, but my husband really wanted to hang pictures of his favorite ski resort. Sometimes design is about compromising, especially when you’re sharing a home with someone! These pictures bring in the light blues we have throughout our room, so they coordinate really nicely.
I wanted to do 3 images across and found the perfect silver frames at Ikea. You can order prints of your pictures directly from Google and they deliver straight to your house!
Neutral Curtains
Plantation shutters are my go-to window treatment for coastal style. I’ve had them in my last 2 houses, but we aren’t sure how long we’re staying in this house. I don’t want to invest thousands of dollars if we are going to move in the next couple of years. So, I bought curtains for the first time!
These creamy beige curtains are room darkening, even though they’re light colored. They don’t block out the light as well as our plantation shutters did, but they definitely help! Plus, they’re super affordable.
Neutral Coastal Rug
In the bedrooms is the only place I opted to forgo blue rugs and infuse neutral colors. Our primary bedroom has a 9×6’ tan hand-braided rug in polypropylene, making it incredibly durable. It’s also much softer than a traditional jute rug. You can even vacuum it!
I bought the same one for our guest room in the ivory color. They are absolutely perfect! Be sure to pair it with a good rug pad in the same size (or slightly smaller). Rug pads are a must!
Wicker Bench
This is actually the storage bench that’s in our basement. I moved it up to our bedroom to see how it would look. Since we don’t have a footboard, a bench is a nice way to add a finished look to the bed. I am not going to use this exact bench, but I am searching for something similar!
A coastal bedroom is so calm and inviting. Organic materials paired with neutrals and blues create a space that is beautiful and relaxing. I hope these coastal bedroom design ideas gave you some good inspiration. Happy decorating!
