See the gorgeous transformation of this fireplace makeover with a stunning mosaic tile fireplace.
We knew we had our work cut out for us when we bought our townhome several years ago. From a kitchen makeover to updating every bathroom, all flooring, all lighting, and more. There wasn’t a single thing we didn’t touch!
Our small living room came with a gas fireplace with some tan trim around it. It had no mantel or any sort of visual interest, and it just looked a little plain and sad. I knew this little fireplace had the protentional to look really cute with some very small updates and also make our living room feel cozier!
The first thing we did was paint the trim a bright white, which already made a huge difference. Then I started my research to get ideas for how I wanted to really update it (let the fun begin!). Check out below for simple updates that can have really big impact on the look of your fireplace!
Small Fireplace Mantel
I 100% knew a mantel would make a huge difference in making our fireplace feel more complete. After researching a few different sites, I found the perfect wood mantel on Etsy. Etsy is actually a really great place to find decor items. This seller allows you to choose from several different sizes and stain colors, so you can really customize it to your style.
I am obsessed with coastal style, but we also lived at 6K feet in the mountains, so I wanted to bring in some rustic elements. I bought the 54” 6×8 mantel in rustic dark walnut stain, and I absolutely loved it!
The great thing about this mantel is that you don’t have to be super handy to hang it. It uses a French cleat hanging system for a strong and secure hold (included with the mantel). It was incredible easy to install and only took us about 10 minutes!
Mosaic Tile Fireplace
One of my friends tiled her fireplace with mosaic tiles and I had major design envy! It inspired me to want to tile our fireplace and it was the perfect way to bring in the coastal vibes I was going for. Check out her beautiful tile fireplace below:
Our contractor was already tiling our kitchen backsplash and bathrooms and said that tiling the fireplace would be a piece of cake. I started researching different patterns and found a beautiful blue and gray mosaic porcelain tile that I absolutely loved. The exact style I chose is sold out, but I found a handful of other perfect options.

Small Fireplace Mantel Decor
Because our living room (and home in general) was really small, I wanted to hang a large round mirror above the mantel. If you have a small space, use mirrors to help your space feel much more spacious. When looking for mirrors for above your mantel, choose a size that is 50-75% the length of your mantel. That way, it will feel the most balanced.
I found this 36” round mirror at Wayfair, and I love it! In our current home, I placed it above a console table in our living room. I just love how versatile it is, and it’s definitely a nice statement piece.
I have to be honest, choosing decor to place on the mantel is not easy for me! I don’t like the mantel to be cluttered or too busy. More stuff just means more stuff to collect dust. For months, the only decor I had on the actual mantel itself was a small plant and candle. What can I say? I like simple! But I ultimately found some really cute rustic candles from World Market, and they definitely helped the mantel feel a little more complete. The exact ones I bought are sold out, but I linked some similar ones below.
This tile fireplace and new mantel completely transformed the look of our living room. It made it feel much more upscale and stylish.
